Part 1: Planning Your Alaska Adventure
Alaska is a dream destination for many travelers, and what starts as excitement, can quickly seem daunting, as the unlimited options for travel itineraries quickly unfolds. Stunning natural beauty and endless opportunities for outdoor adventures, all separated by hours of travel, mountain passes, and the list goes on…Especially if you’re not familiar with the state. Here are some tips for getting started & planning your Alaska adventure like a pro:
- Choose the right time to visit. Alaska’s tourism season runs from May to September, with the peak season being in July and August. If you want to avoid the crowds and get the best deals, consider traveling in May or September. Keep in mind that the weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for rain or even snow.
- Decide on your itinerary. Alaska is a vast state, and there are countless attractions and activities to choose from. Consider what you want to see and do, and plan your itinerary accordingly. Keep in mind to include specific, and we might also recommend, limited locations, into your itinerary as well. Hiking, kayaking, wildlife watching, glacier cruises and more are available in many locations throughout the state, and rather than spend your time constantly moving around to see them, consider less travel and more time in each location instead.
- Book your accommodations in advance. Lodging can be limited in Alaska, especially during peak season, so it’s important to book your accommodations in advance. There are a variety of options, from hotels and resorts to cabins and backcountry lodges. Not only is availability going to be a factor in your choice of accommodations, but don’t overlook accessibility as well. Booking in advance will ensure you get the best bang for your buck
Part 2: Getting Around Alaska
Alaska is a vast state, and getting around can be a task. Make sure to take some time to plan your movements, and you will be traveling like a pro in no time. Here are some tips for getting around Alaska:
- Rent a car. With wide roads, plenty of parking and miles of endless highways, a car is the most convenient way to get around Alaska. Keep in mind that many roads in Alaska are unpaved, so choose a vehicle with four-wheel drive and your possibilities for adventure and access are limitless.
- Take a cruise. If you want to see Alaska’s coastline and glaciers in a much more passive, yet equally engaging way, consider taking a cruise. There are many options available, from large cruise ships to small expedition ships., including cruise durations, themes, specific locations, and more. A food & wine cruise with a side of whale watching perhaps? Yep – Alaska has that!
- Consider taking a train. There is just such a charm about traveling via train, and the Alaska Railroad offers this charm and some great travel options. First off are the truly unique routes that make for a great way to see the state’s interior, with tracks that run from Anchorage to Fairbanks and beyond. The train offers spectacular views of Alaska’s scenery, and includes many seating options and additional amenities for a comfortable and enjoyable tour through the state.
- By Air. Because so much of the state is in the interior and inaccessible due to large mountains, snow, or simply no roads, travel by small planes or helicopter is much more common than most places in the lower 48. It’s also a great way to get an incredible view of the natural scenery.
Part 3: Tips for Enjoying Your Alaska Adventure
Now that you’ve planned your Alaska adventure and figured out how to get around, it’s time to enjoy all that the state has to offer. Once you have determined your level of activity – passive or active; your desire to move around – less time/more towns or more time/less towns; and the regions which you will focus your itinerary, there are some additional absolutes that will help you to relax, and enjoy your trip around the state. Here are a few tips to keep in mind regardless of what your trip looks like:
- Dress in layers. Alaska’s weather can be unpredictable, with temperatures that can vary widely throughout the day. Dress in layers so that you can adjust to the constantly changing conditions.
- Embrace the outdoors. Alaska’s natural beauty is its biggest draw, so be sure to spend plenty of time outdoors. Go for a hike, take a kayak trip, or simply enjoy the scenery from a scenic overlook.
- Respect wildlife. Don’t forget that, while you are embracing the outdoors, don’t embrace the wildlife. Alaska is home to a variety of wildlife, including bears, moose, and caribou. Keep a safe distance and absolutely avoid approaching or feeding.
- Pack insect repellent. An often overlooked component of the beautiful summer weather in Alaska is the mosquitoes! They are especially a nuisance in the summer months, so make sure to pack plenty of insect repellent and consider wearing long sleeves and pants to avoid bites.
